Under direction, provides direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process, performs technical nursing functions and upholds the standard of practice of a professional nurse in caring for infant through ! geriatric patients in the Operating Room.
Position Responsibilities:
Essential functions:
- Utilizes critical thinking and evidence-based practice to facilitate the nursing process in the provision of patient care.
- Assures compliance with the Iowa Nurse Practice Act and other regulatory standards.
- Performs according to the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
- Performs nursing skills and maintains professional expertise as defined by department competencies.
- Performs according to AORN Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.
- Documents and maintains data on patient's record.
- Maintains a safe environment.
- Applies teaching/learning concepts to patient and family education.
- Demonstrates communication skills.
- Acts as a patient advocate.
- Assesses plans and evaluates the nursing care needs of the patient before, during and after a surgical procedure.! li>
- Provides nursing care to the patient undergoing surgic! al procedures.
- Provides comfort and support for perioperative patients.
- Participates in the care of patients receiving local, conscious sedation, MAC, block and general anesthesia.
- Carries out physician orders.
- Ensures all medications are correctly labeled, administered and charted according to established policies and procedures.
- Observes patient for changes in condition.
- Assists surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other personnel as needed to ensure good patient care.
- Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
- Positions patient, prepares operative areas, and adjusts table to proper position according to standard policies.
- Coordinates the operating room with respect to sterility, cleanliness, availability of functioning equipment, supplies and implants.
- Cares for specimens and cultures as directed by set policies and p! rocedures.
- Serves as the primary coordinator of all disciplines for well coordinated patient care.
- Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems.
- Follows and maintains radiation safety standards as outlined in radiation safety manual.
- Functions in circulator role, caring for patient and assisting physician during surgical procedures.
- Sets up and operates all equipment used in the operating room.
- Functions in scrub role, setting up sterile field and assisting physician with surgical procedures.
- Provides age and culturally appropriate care.
- Orients and mentors new staff members.
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Cooperates as a member of the perioperative and overall hospital team.!
- Delegates and/or supervises aspects of care to team members.
- Participates in quality improvement activities and shared decision making teams.
- Provides education/orientation to staff, students and other hospital employees.
- Performs related work per orientation and position competency checklists and skills validation.
- Assists with transporting and other office functions.
- Cross trains as needed in other functions of surgical services.
Required:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- For nurses hired to begin employment January 1, 2012 and after, a baccalaureate degree in nursing is required within ten (10) years of beginning employment.
- Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration and actions of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical ! equipment as it relates to patient care; and ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
- Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.
- Two years of Operating Room Experience.
- Specialty Certification â" CNOR.
- Knowledgeable in AORN Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.
Current Iowa nursing license as a registered nurse required.
