Job Summary:
The Director of Patient Safety & Risk Management will be responsible for evaluation, oversight and management of patient safety, risk management, patient relations and regulatory standards. Supports the organization’s mission and values through activities to protect all assets and resources of the organization. Overseeing patient grievances and protecting the rights of the patient as well as the clinical and medical staff. Utilizes critical thinking to identify untoward trends and collaborates for resolution and prevention. Protective of confidentiality of information. Acts as a resource for the organization regarding issues of patient safety and rights, regulatory standards and create benchmarks for patient safety and identify strategic initiatives to support the organization’s goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Directs programs involving risk mitigation/management and initiatives related to providing safer care to patients. This position is responsible for providing information to various key stakeholders on the progress and status of described programs/initiatives.
- Directs development, implementation and operations for the Patient Safety & Risk Management Plan in collaboration with Regulatory Compliance Department, Quality Department, and Legal Department.
- Oversees the implementation of compliance policies and procedures to ensure that they meet organization's compliance requirements. Has management responsibility and accountability for our organization’s overall compliance with regulations from the State Department of Healthcare Services, CMS and other regulatory agencies for Accreditation/licensure, risk management, compliance, patient representation, event research, Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Oversees the events reporting process, root cause analysis, and event investigation/review. Participates in system office initiatives and programs to mitigate risks identified at existing organization facilities, resulting in reduced costs and adverse patient outcomes.
- Receives and oversees responses to patient complaints and investigates to solve issues promptly. Acts as an intermediary between patients, staff and family to provide clear communication between all parties regarding any outstanding issues
- Provides leadership, administrative direction, oversight and implementation support for risk management, regulatory strategies, initiatives and processes that support optimal performance in the areas of fiscal and qualitative outcomes, patient safety, and regulatory functions.
- Provides leadership for clinical events process-identification and prioritization of cases with appropriate leadership, case write up and summation, patient complaints, complications, nursing peer review.
- Coordinates with Chief Legal officer regarding potential risk to the organization and notifications to insurer carrier.
- Responsible for pro-active policy and procedure development and revisions to meet enterprise wide regulatory and safety requirements.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):
- Bachelors’ degree in Nursing. With a minimum 5 years’ experience inpatient/outpatient risk management at a manager level or above.
- Knowledge of healthcare issues and environment and effective at leading programs.
- Knowledge of State and Federal healthcare regulations including CA Title 2.
- Appropriate advanced degrees, certifications, and/or training pertaining to areas of clinical patient safety and risk management recommended.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Computer competent, highly effective collaboration, written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to communicate well with families, patients, staff and physicians based on age, cultural beliefs and educational level.
- Able to facilitate conflict resolution, competent in identification of risk situations and resolution.
- Attention to detail development and maintenance of regulatory paperwork.
