The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, clinical track or tenure track faculty appointment in Anesthesiology in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center ( LVMC ). The recently renovated LVMC is a state-of-the-art teaching hospital providing specialized care for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states.

The department is seeking a candidate who is committed to excellent patient care, shares an enthusiastic dedication for educating our students, technicians, and residents, and who will contribute to enhancing the national prominence of the Anesthesiology section in the veterinary teaching hospital. Anticipated percentage effort allocations for this position are ~50% clinical service and 50% divided among scholarly, teaching, and service activities for a tenure track position and ~75% clinical service and ~25% scholarly/teaching/service divided allocation for a clinical track position. Scholarly, teaching, and service time will be expended in the developm ent of a creative program of scholarship, didactic and laboratory teaching in anesthesiology, academic service, and outreach activities. Appointment rank and percent effort allocation will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications, expertise and interests. Clinical duties will include weekend, holidays, and after-hours obligations.

The successful candidate will also have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in all levels of technician, student, and house officer education.

Required Education and Experience

  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • Successful completion of an American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia ( ACVAA ) or European College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia ( ECVAA ) residency program. Individuals having credentials accepted by the ACVAA / ECVAA or in their final year of residency training are also encouraged to apply and will be considered.
In a ddition, positions at the following ranks will require:
ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR : An established record of experience and scholarship evidenced by manuscript preparation and publications comparable to that expected for commensurate rank at ISU ; professional practice and clinical teaching as a board certified anesthesiologist; national and/or international scholarly, clinical, or education presentations; and a successful record of external granting activity are required.

CLINICAL ASSOCIATE OR CLINICAL PROFESSOR : Candidates must meet the requirements commensurate for each rank at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • A record of or notable potential for scholarship obtained through manuscript publication/preparation, or national scholarly, clinical, or educational presentations, or evidence of having applied for, received, or completed grants/funding.
  • A unique clinical focus that will enhance anesthesia service activities in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
  • Demonstrated ability to work amicably with a diverse departmental faculty in maintaining a positive work environment.
Required Licensure(s)/Certification(s)

State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before first day of employment.

Preferred Licensure(s)/Certification(s)

Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia or the European College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia.

The LVMC is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion, exotic, and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states.
