:
Provides professional nursing care to patients undergoing sedation for diagnostic, therapeutic, painful or invasive procedures.
!
Utilizes specialized assessment skills during all phases of sedation to include pre-procedure, during sedation, and then the recovery period.
Serves patient populations including infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
:

Assists Sedation Team Nurse Practitioner and physician with monitoring before, during and after sedation, along with the recovery period.
·
Collaborates with the Sedation Team Nurse Practitioner in coordinating sedation for ASA Class I and II patients.
·
Collaborates with the anesthesiologist in coordinating sedation for ASA Class III and IV patients.
·
Interacts with patients and families, providing information to Nurse Practitioner and anesthesiologist both pre- and post-invasive procedure.
Information includes obtaining or verifying pertinent history, sedation instructions, verification that informed consent i! s obtained, and assists with post procedure follow-up.

Collaborates between all disciplines and across the continuum of care including outpatient and inpatient settings.
·
Coordinates and collaborates with the physician and/or RN during diagnostic, invasive or painful procedures.
·
Utilizes hospital/department information system to process data and retrieve patient information along with completion of medical records on the same date of the sedation.
·
Performs and directs appropriate emergency measures as deemed necessary; e.g., CPR, protecting patient from injury.
·
Triages patients and utilizes critical thinking skills to problem
solve with staff, physicians, patients, families, and ancillary departments.
·
Works independently with limited direct supervision using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, and professional judgment.
·
Maintains knowledge of eq! uipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, drainage devices).
·
Participates in data collection and quality management activities as requested.
Qualifications
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
:
·
Possession of a current license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
·
BSN preferred
.
·
Five (5) years of acute care experience required.
·
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
·
Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained
by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks)
·
ACLS and PALS certified within six (6) months of employment.
·
Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS) training within six (6)! months of hire.
