    Duties

    Summary

    This is a term position not to exceed two years and may be extended two years.

    This is an episodic , intermittent position, on an irregular or occasional basis with hours and days of work not on a prearranged schedule and with compensation for the actual time employed or for service rendered.

    Applicants must understand that the work performed is primarily related to readiness for and deployment for response during the aftermath of a disaster or public health emergency, where work may be field-based, that may be remote and austere, caring for sick, injured, dying, or deceased persons. This work requires above average health, physical, and mental conditioning with routine long periods of repetitive walking, bending, lifting, and carrying, such as carrying national disaster medical system equipment or heavy patients on litters. Incumbent must be capable of working in a high stress, high-security, remote, austere, and uncharacterized environment, void of infrastructure and vital services, requiring specific physical demands, such as the ability to lift 50 po unds, and work characteristics that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. For these reasons, employees are required to complete a physical and health screening process to meet and maintain certain physical standards, as well as mental, behavioral, and cognitive competencies.

    Responsibilities

    • Prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment using sterile techniques.
    • Prepares patients for surgery by washing and disinfecting incision sites; assisting with proper pa tient positioning on the operating room table; draping patients and surgical site with sterile drapes and assure's patient's safety, comfort, and integrity of care are met; and, assisting patient transported safely to and from the operating room as needed.
    • Provides assistance on various surgical procedures ranging from routine to major complex and trauma cases.
    • Passes instruments and supplies to surgeons and first assistants.
    • Assists with maintaining retraction of skin and internal organs during the procedure.
    • Assures any specimen collections are properly processed and taken for laboratory analysis.

    Qualifications

    This is a Standing Register - Open Continuous Announcement and will have an initial cutoff on 05/11/18, and the vacancy will close on June 15, 2018. Applications received AFTER a cutoff date will be considered in the next group of candidates.

    To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

    Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-06, in the Federal service preparing the operating room set-up, sterilizing equipment, and patients for surgeries; assisting in patient transport and observing changes in patient condition during transport and utilizing knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures to assist surgeon and/or anesthes iologist during surgical emergencies.

    One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
