Pre/Post Job Summary : Provides support and back up for personnel by performing the following dutie s.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities : These responsibilities are fundamental to the performance of the job that include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Communicates appropriately with peers, management and physicians, patients and patientâs family members.
- Participates in the facility nursing practice activities and projects for improvement in patient care practices.
- Complies with the established nursing care standards, protocols, policies and procedures as described in the facilities policies and procedures.
- Participates in the centerâs staff meetings and in-services offered.
- Maintains CEU as required by State and centerâs policies.
- Demonstrates competence in admitting, recovering patients for regional, local, IV conscious sedation and general anesthesia for pediatric, adolescent, adult and elderly patients.
- Demonstrates competency in admission process thro ugh discharge process of the patient.
- Participates in the education/orientation of patient, family and colleagues.
- Demonstrates competency in preparing and administrating medication.
- Demonstrates competency in teaching patients, family member or significant others in the pre-op through discharge processes.
- Providing of professional nursing care at all times to the patients, families and customers, making every effort to remain flexible, cooperative, compassionate and supportive to their needs.
- Serves as a liaison between the patient and physician.
- Assisting in the duties of stocking, cleaning and inventory of the department.
- Serves as a patient advocate.
- Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth and development
- Uses the nursing process and team approach to consistently assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care to meet patient needs.
- Delegates nursing care activities to a nd monitors care given by appropriate care team members in accordance with patient needs and the personal/professional capabilities and qualifications.
- Documents care provided according to the policies and procedures of the facility.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: has a high school education and/or has an equivalent. Graduate of an accredited nursing school, with two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Current nursing license from the State of Iowa. Has obtained or will obtain within 6 months of employment CPR and ACLS certification and PALS certification.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as physician orders, laboratory results, safety rules, operating and technical instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to perform detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Promotes a positivity within the facility, including cooperation and communication between the departments

STANDARDS OF EMPLOYMENT : All employees must meet the following standards.

O.R. JOB SUMMARY: To provides support direct nursing care to patients during their surgical procedures at the facility in accordance with ARON, JCAHO, AAAHC and CMS standards, rules and regulations. Responsible to OR Supervisor and to keep OR Supervisor informed of problems involving patients, surgeons, or equipment in the OR.
Responsibility to the Center: To support and espouse the mission and policies of the facility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Communicates appropriately with peers, management and physicians, patients and patientâs family members.
- Participates in at least one of the facilityâs committees.
- Adheres to surgical principles and practices as described in the facilityâs policy and procedures.
- Participates in the facilityâs staff meetings and in-services offered.
- Maintains CEUâs and Computer Based Learning Modules as required by State and facilityâs policies.
- Demonstrates competence in sterile technique, patient safety practices, equipment usage and infection control processes
DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Arrive at facility at scheduled time.
- Change into scrub suit.
- Check schedule for assignment and potential changes in schedule.
- Retrieve appropriate case basket for assigned OR from Sterile Supply room and move to assigned OR.
- Check contents of case with physicianâs preference card.
- Retrieve and assemble all equipment required for case.
- Wipe down room per AORN standards.
- With OR Tech, open appropriate sterile packs, instruments and extra supplies needed for procedure. (Be aware of âHoldâ items â" opening only what is needed.) Ready needed drugs per prefe rence card.
- When the OR is open and ready, go to Pre-op area to greet and assess the patient. Sign and date nurse section of the Admission form. Be sure H&P is current and labs are on chart.
- When admission process is complete and CRNA or anesthesiologist and surgeon are in attendance, site marked as appropriate, antibiotic started and versed is given, move patient via stretcher to OR suite.
- Align stretcher and OR bed, making sure both are locked. Assist patient in transfer to OR bed. Center patient, cover with blanket, check for good body alignment and secure safety strap. Place pillow under knees, heel padding, etc. as appropriate. Have all positioning aids in room.
- Keep OR doors closed to assure patient privacy and proper air flow.
- Assist the anesthesiologist/CRNA as needed.
- Count sharps and sponges with OR Tech. Count instruments if appropriate for procedure.
- Clip hair and prep patient per surgeonâs protocol. < li>Insert Foley catheter if needed.
- Move necessary equipment (i.e. bovie, Bair hugger, liposuction machine) to appropriate positions around patient. Use approved extension cords when necessary, try to avoid walkway hazards. Check tourniquet if needed for case.
- Tie and adjust surgeonâs gown and perform âTime Outâ per facility policy.
- Straighten and organize room and patient keeping staff safety in mind.
- Be prepared to assist the anesthesiologist/CRNA, OR tech and surgeon or to retrieve items as needed for surgical procedure.
- Write required documentation on OR record. Notify OR Supervisor if delays or problems arise during procedure.
- Perform counts at end of case with OR Tech.
- Assist with applying dressings, bra, girdles, splints braces, etc. at end of case.
- Cover patient with warm blanket and prepare for transport.
- Call SDS or PACU and notify of eminent arrival. Accompany patient and CRNA to PACU an d give report to nurse.
- Return to OR and either prepare for next case or take extra supplies to clean room to put away.
- Take any pathology specimens to the lab: log it, cover with Formalin, put in red container and document same on lab form.
- Obtain updated schedule for next 72 hours. Pull preference cards for surgeons/procedures from updated schedule.
- On clean table pull all items and instruments listed on case card from the Sterile Supply room and non-sterile supply room.
- Place small items for each case in plastic baskets in Sterile Supply room
- Place case preference card in basket.
- If instruments or items are missing, make a list of âneedâ and tape to pick ticket on case basket.
- Pull all cases in this manner.
- Assist fellow staff members in room turn over.
- If unassigned, offer breaks and lunch relief, or start on weekly/monthly Housekeeping duties.
- Keep all OR equipment neat and order ly. Put items away immediately after use.
- Assist Processing Tech in cleaning and re-assembly of instrument trays, etc.
- Be responsive to OR Supervisor, Administrator and actively participate in staff committee and meetings.
- Clock out and remove OR attire before leaving the Facility.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must have good visual acuity.
