Housed within the Division of Undergraduate Education, Student Success Initiatives (SSI) aims to provide students the persona, academic and professional support to thrive at UCI and Beyond. SSI is a learning community that empowers students to be provided and take an active role in their academic careers and personal endeavors. The Transfer Student Center (TSC) works with all transfer students to facilitate their transition and overall success at UCI. The Transfer Student Center directs students to appropriate campus programs and services. We also organize weekly workshops, provide formal and informal mentoring, and provide students with a space for studying. The Transfer Student Center strives to foster a sense of community among the transfers at UCI and advocates for them in order to enhance their academic and social experience. TSC works closely with Tau Sigma National Honor Society and provides guidance in this organization’s work to advocate and support transfer students at UCI.
Under the general direction of the Student Success initiatives (SSI) Transfer Student Center Program Director, this TSC Counselor works collaboratively to provide high-quality programs, services, and initiatives that enhance transfer student engagement and retention across UCI. Provides current and prospective transfer students with advising and programming related to transition, academic and personal success, and interprets related University policies and procedures. This role develops, implements and evaluates transfer student initiatives including outreach, counseling, and referral to assist students experiencing academic and/or adjustment issues. The primary focus of this role will be to provide leadership, coordination, and counseling services for UCI’s Umoja Program and provide targeted support to Black and African American students. The Umoja Community at UC Irvine is designed to assist students of African descent in the transition to a four-year university. The position would be charged with working collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, Center for Black Cultures Resources and Research, Student Outreach and Retention Center and more, to enhance transfer student experiences. Additionally, this role will organize and coordinate summer programming to engage incoming transfer students with transitional and orientation support services. This role will interpret related University policies and procedures, maintain confidentiality and helps with reports that support the goals and mission of Student Success Initiatives and the Division of Undergraduate education. Assists with various administrative duties, as assigned.

$58,500.00 - $81,100.00 (Annual Salary) Expected Pay Range within the Full Salary Range $58,500.00 - $103,700.00 (Annual Salary)

Required:
3-5 years of experience in student advising.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development. Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership. Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching/learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy. Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under-prepared students in higher education. Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students. Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling, and analyzing data, and generating reports. Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.. Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services. Familiarity with the unique issues of transfer students, which are often, adult, re-entry, parents, and/or first-generation, in a college setting. Direct experience in developing innovative workshops, seminars and presentations. Effective interpersonal skills necessary for communicating effectively with a broad range of people including students, administration, staff, faculty and the public.


Preferred:
Master’s degree in related area.
Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs. Knowledge of the Umoja Program and/or experience supporting Black/African American students in their development in education.


Special Conditions Required:
Required to work on nights and weekends on occasion.
