STAFF NURSE

Percent Time: 100% Type of Position Regular: A position which is considered essential for the effective long-term operation of the university. Persons appointed to this position will receive the privileges and! benefits associated with regular employment status. Duties:
- Identify and screen patients for sedation by phone or in person prior to any elective sedations
- Examine and evaluate patients on the day of sedation as part of the screening process
- Consult with Anesthesia staff prior to administration of any sedation medication
- Discuss sedation plan with patient and/or family
- Place peripheral intravenous access lines as necessary
- Administer sedation medications using defined protocols under the supervision of an Anesthesiologist or CRNA
- Complete electronic medical records
- Follow anesthesia protocols and guidelines for the monitoring, management and recovery of patients undergoing a procedure under sedation
- Complete specific competencies required by the Department of Anesthesia to maintain adequate skills (particularly airway and rescue management)
- Maintain a large database which monitors! patient and sedation data for quality assurance purposes !
- Perform routine tasks such as replenishment of supplies at specific satellite locations
- Follow Anesthesia guidelines regarding NPO criteria and sedation plan as they pertain to day of procedure
- Present pertinent cases at the Anesthesia Clinical Case Conference
- Maintain nursing competencies as required including PALS and ACLS
- Will perform routine sedation cases in anesthetizing locations which include the Ambulatory Surgery Center and the Main Operating Rooms under supervision of an Anesthesiologist or CRNA
- Accompany and assist CRNAs and/or Anesthesiologists in various satellite locations while they perform anesthesia cases
- Participate in continuing medical education activities including simulation and quality improvement activities
- Other duties as assigned
- Schedule may vary based on the needs of the Department
An Associate's degree in Nursing, Diploma in Nu! rsing, Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, or Master's degree in Nursing (MNHP or MSN) is required. Experience Required:
- Minimum of two years of direct experience providing care specifically to pediatric patients.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with patient/families (particularly pediatric patients), nursing staff, physicians and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions
- Demonstrated ability to function independently is required
- General computers skills are required
- Excellent written and verbal skills
Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required. Desirable Qualifications:
HIGHLY DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is preferred and highly desirable.
- Two years of experience working with critically ill pediatric patients is highly desirable. This ! includes experience in areas such as Transport of critically ill patien! ts, emergency room, pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, surgical and medical intensive care as well as post anesthesia care unit.
