For complete informations about this occupation opportunity please read the description below. SECTION I: GENERAL DEFINITION / SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of the Department of Anesthesia shall have the responsibility to attend to coverage for! anesthesia for Surgery Department, laboring division of the Obstetrical Department, trauma alerts in the E.R. Department, intubations as needed hospital-wide, and any other miscellaneous needs that may arise. The Manager shall oversee the functions of the department staff while reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer within the administrative division. Administers general, regional and monitored anesthesia care for scheduled and emergency surgical and obstetrical procedures. Performs anesthesia-related procedures. Evaluates patients preoperatively, formulates and carries out an anesthesia care plan including monitoring and recording patient reaction to anesthesia and modifying the anesthetic plan accordingly. Actively participates in appropriate care during the postoperative period.

    • Effectively processes physician complaints and concerns as they arise.
    3. Department Dashboard

    Department will promote customer satisfaction by working toward designed service metrics and targets indicated on the dashboard report.

    4. Evaluates the patient preoperatively and prepares for the anesthetic

    a. Visits patients prior to surgery and complies a complete medical history, performs any needed patient examination and reviews all pertinent medical records.

    b. Formulates an anesthesia care plan. Informs the patient of the anesthetic options, risks and benefits, and then answers patient questions concerning the anesthetic.

    c. Notifies nursing staff regarding sp! ecial equipment requirements for the anesthetic, such as invasive monitoring, extra IVs, etc.

    d. Performs a complete anesthesia machine check, prepares the appropriate medications, and completes the room set up for administering anesthetics.

    e. Utilizes appropriate transport monitors, oxygen, and ventilator support when indicated.

    f. Assures presence of patent IV access if required for the anesthetic.

    5. Administers general, regional and monitored anesthesia care for scheduled and emergency surgical, obstetrical, and diagnostic procedures.

    a. Supervises the transfer of the patient to the operating table and places appropriate monitors.

    b. Performs other anesthesia related procedures including epidural steroid injections, fiber-optic intubations, etc.

    c. Induces general or monitored anesthesia care.

    d. Assists with positioning of the patient and padding of all pressure points to prevent injury.

    ! e. Develops and maintains an accurate and legible anesthetic record thr! oughout the procedure.

    f. Monitors appropriate patient functions according to the Anesthesia Department’s standards of care and patient condition.

    g. Identifies and assesses complications of the anesthetic, communicates with the attending surgeon and initiates appropriate treatment.

    h. Manages the patient’s airway using a variety of techniques including endotracheal intubations, laryngeal mask airway, mask ventilation, etc.

    i. Ensures the security and accurate accounting of all controlled drugs used during anesthesia.

    6. Manages the patient’s care at the completion of the operative procedure and ensures safety during transport.

    a. Utilizes appropriate monitors, oxygen, and ventilator support during transport to the post anesthesia care unit.

    b. Gives an accurate and complete report to the post anesthetic care provider including a summary of the intraoperative course and potential post anesthetic complicati! ons.

    c. Assesses complications and potential complications in the immediate post anesthetic period, implements appropriate actions, and notifies the attending surgeon.

    7. Responds to calls within the hospital for emergency airway maintenance.

    a. Responds to STAT calls and performs endotracheal intubation or otherwise manages the airway of patients in full arrest as required when available.

    b. Administers medications and performs endotracheal intubations, endotracheal tube exchanges, or other airway management on patients who are not in full arrest.

    A. ABILITIES

    • Clinical Skills: Able to work alone to provide clinical anesthesia

    • Reasoning Ability: Able to assess and respond to complex clinical situations
    B. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    • Graduate from AANA approved anesthesia school
    C. ANNUAL REQUIREMENTS, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:
    • CRNA recertification every two years by AANA.
    • Maintains ARNP License in good standing with the Iowa Board of Nursing.
    D. MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT:
    • Able to successfully operate the department tools and equipment in order to safely administer anesthesia.
